About

As you might have guessed, my name is Pascal and I am based in Zurich, Switzerland. I currently work at Google as a Software Engineer at the intersection of AI and the web.

Pascal Birchler

Most recently, I have been working on accelerating the web through CMSes like WordPress. This involved workstreams such as improving performance, client-side media processing, and Web AI explorations, but also increasing adoption of new web platform APIs such as Invoker Commands or CSS carousels.

After the above contributions and my work on AI-powered WordPress development with WP-CLI and the Model Context Protocol (MCP), I have co-founded the new WordPress AI team.

As an active WordPress community member and core committer, I know how important it is to give something back. Over the years I have made numerous contributions to WordPress and other open source projects. For example, I helped make embedding content from WordPress and updating your site easier than ever.

I am also a co-maintainer of WP-CLI, the official command line interface for WordPress. I also helped organize local events such as WordCamps and the WordPress Zurich Meetup. Most recently, I have led the WordCamp Europe 2025 speakers team:

From time to time I also speak at conferences about technical topics like internationalization and performance. Some videos can be found on WordPress.tv, with slides available on Speaker Deck.
